Fire service issues update after huge fire at mill as road still shut

Firefighters worked through the night to tackle a huge blaze at a derelict mill in Bolton.

The fire broke out at the building on Spa Road at around 3.35pm yesterday (Monday). Huge plumes of smoke could be seen from miles around as they billowed from the derelict five-storey mill.

Six fire engines were scrambled to the scene, as well as the air unit, technical response unit and a hydraulic platform. In an update issued this morning, a spokesperson for the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said the fire was extinguished by crews overnight.

Firefighters remain on the scene this morning dampening down hotspots, though the response has been scaled back. A meeting will take place later to discuss 'the next steps for the building'.

Spa Road remains shut both ways between Mayor Street and Moor Lane. People should continue to avoid the area.

In the update posted at around 7am this morning, GMFRS said: "Firefighters worked through the night to bring the fire on Spa Road, Bolton, under control. The fire has now been extinguished, with fire crews dampening down any remaining hotspots from the outside of the building due to the structure being unsafe.

"Operations have since been scaled back and one fire engine, alongside the turn table ladder, remain at the scene. A multiagency meeting will be taking place later this morning to discuss the next steps for the building.

"Spa Road remains shut between New Holders Street and Moor Lane while fire crews remain at the scene. Members of the public are being asked to avoid the area."
