Firefighters use ladders to rescue 11 people from blaze at Leith flats

Terrified residents were evacuated from a block of flats by ladders after a fire ripped through a Leith building overnight.

Nine fire engines raced to Leith Walk after the alarm was raised at 1.10am this morning.

Two men are in hospital being treated for smoke inhalation as a result of the blaze.

Their current condition is unknown.

Seven women and two men also suffered smoke inhalation but were treated at the scene.

Fire crews battled the blaze till 3.35am.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue spokeswoman told the Record: "We were alerted at 1.10am on Sunday, February 2 to reports of a fire at a block of residential flats.

"Nine appliances were sent to Leith Walk.

"Firefighters rescued 11 people who had to evacuate the building using ladders because of a presence of heavy smoke in the common stairwell.

"Seven women and two men were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene.

"Two men were taken to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

"Their current condition is unknown.

"Crews managed to contain and the extinguished the fire.

"They left at 3.35am after insuring the area was safe.

"The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage."
