Firefighters to spend second night at Kirkdale fire warehouse in battle to stop inferno restarting

Firefighters are set to spend a second night at the scene of a fire that engulfed a warehouse in Kirkdale , just a year after another fire at a facility on the same street.

Neighbours were warned to keep their windows shut all day after the blaze erupted at a warehouse on Foster Street, which was reported to the fire brigade just before 4am this morning.

At its height there were 10 fire engines tackling the inferno, which engulfed waste inside the warehouse and then quickly spread.

Area Manager Paul Murphy, Incident Commander on scene, said crews were faced with a large fire when they arrived this morning.

Mr Murphy said: "Firefighters have worked tirelessly and have done a fantastic job ensuring the fire was brought under control safely and efficiently.

"We have worked alongside multi agency partners including the police , city council, United Utilities, Network Rail and site owners to ensure a minimum impact on the environment as well as ensuring business continuity for the surrounding premises.

"The smoke plume has significantly reduced as a result of our firefighting efforts but we would still ask residents in the nearby area to keep their windows and doors closed at this time."

The operation has been scaled back to nine engines since then but Merseyside Fire and Rescue's most recent update said they were having to use a high volume pump to spray burning waste in the building from above.

A statement on Twitter from the force said: "Firefighters are expected to remain on site throughout the night. The plan is to use machinery from the site to remove the affected material from the buildings. This will then be raked out & amped down to ensure there are no hot spots or risk of reignition."

The fire service said that they had met with Merseyside Police , United Utilities, Liverpool council, Network Rail and the owners of the warehouse.

Road closures were put in place on Sandhills Lane, Juniper Street, Studholme Street and Bankhall Street when the fire hit.

A blaze last year on Foster Street produced smoke plumes that could be seen as far away as Wirral. It is unclear whether it is on the same site as last night's fire.
