Firefighters to remain at scene in Newark overnight after 1,000 tonnes of metal catch fire

Crews tackling a huge fire at a scrap metal yard near Newark say they will remain at the scene overnight to fight the continuing blaze.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said 1,000 tonnes of metal caught fire at the site on Wednesday (April 17).

The fire broke on the Great North Road site occupied by Briggs Metals, just off the A46, near to the British Sugar factory, on Wednesday afternoon.

Plumes of smoke could be seen from the main road.

Nine appliances from Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue were at the scene.

The fire service's area manager Mick Sharman, said in an update from the scene: "Our fire operations are well under way and we're working hard to tackle the fire.

"It's been very challenging circumstances. There is still quite a lot of smoke that has been released from the fire.

"We'll be here for some time and will be working through the night. We will have approximately six fire engines left through the night, making sure we carry on our firefighting actions.

"We'll be revisiting the site in the morning and reassessing the situation. I would advise residents to keep away from the area."
