Firefighters tackling major blaze after 'explosion' at Scots secondary school

Firefighters have tackled a major blaze at a Scots school.

Engines were called to Aberdeen's Northfield Academy at 1.43pm amid huge plumes of smoke pouring from the building.

Dramatic pictures from the scene showed black smoke filling the sky over the Granite City.

Orange flames appeared to be leaping out of parts of the building.

Northfield is home to hundreds of pupils and is understood to have a capacity of around 800.

Aberdeen Council tweeted to say children have been sent home.

They tweeted: "Due to a fire at Northfield Academy, the school has been evacuated.

"Arrangements are being made for pupils to go home."

Local Guy Ingerson reported hearing an 'explosion'.

He tweeted: "Just heard an explosion near or at Northfield Academy. Really worried about the people there."

A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue service said: "We got a call at 1.43pm about Northfield Academy in Aberdeen.

"We have four pumps and one height vehicle in attendance.

"We have two jets in use."

The blaze was extinguished shortly after 3pm.

A statement from Aberdeen City Council added "Northfield Academy fire: the fire is out and Scottish Fire and Rescue Service are reporting no casualties."
