Firefighters tackle blaze at Indian restaurant in Newport

Fire crews tackled a blaze at an Indian restaurant on a main city road in Newport.

South Wales Fire and Rescue were called to the scene of the fire in Maindee, Newport at around 12pm.

Fire crews were working to extinguish the fire at the Koh I Noor Indian restaurant on Chepstow Road, near the Godfrey Morgan Wetherspoons pub.

The road was closed to motorists from the junction with Albert Avenue and buses were diverted from the area.

Witnesses said the Koh I Noor restaurant was on fire. One man who did not want to be named said he saw smoke coming from the property before emergency services arrived.

He added: "It’s mainly downstairs" but said he "couldn't go down there because it’s a bit dark and dangerous".

Our reporter at the scene said: "A fire appliance appears to have used hose reel equipment.

"The road is still shut to traffic and pedestrians in both directions from The George pub.
