Firefighters tackling large blaze at a mill in Wigan

Firefighters are tackling a blaze at a mill in Wigan.

The flames took hold at Leyland Mill at around 7pm on Wednesday evening (October 23).

The roof of one mill building - measuring 100m by 40m - is alight, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said.

Fire crews are currently working at the scene, on Leyland Mill Lane, using jets and aerial ladders to bring the fire under control.

Four crews from Ashton, Atherton, Hindley and Wigan were battling the flames at the height of the fire.

However the fire has since reduced in size and firefighters are said to be making “good progress”.

Neighbours have been asked to keep their windows and doors shut as the fire has produced a lot of smoke.

Firefighters are expected to remain at the scene overnight.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service have been tweeting about the incident.

“We are currently at the scene of a fire at Leyland Mill on Leyland Mill Lane, Wigan,” they wrote earlier this evening.

“The roof of one mill building - measuring 100m by 40m - is alight and crews from Ashton, Atherton, Hindley and Wigan are battling the flames.

“Firefighters were quickly on the scene and this incident is under control.

“We are using two jets and ladders to dampen the flames.

“There is a lot of smoke in the local area so as a precaution please keep windows and doors closed until it clears.”

They later added: “The mill fire in Wigan is reduced in size as firefighters make good progress.

“Soon just three fire engines - from Atherton and Wigan - will remain at the scene.

“We would like to praise our crews for their swift action and thank local people for their co-operation.”
