Firefighters tackle major grass wildfire in Bonhill

Fire crews battled a major wildfire in Bonhill last night amid soaring temperatures this Easter weekend.

Scottish Fire and rescue  confirmed they scrambled to the scene of a large grass fire in the hills behind Pappert and Braehead, around 5.25pm.

Residents reported being able to see the blaze from their homes in Balloch, as firefighters and nine appliances rushed to the scene to tackle the wildfire.

Photos posted on Facebook show flames spread across the hilltop with smoke billowing above houses in Bonhill.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue spokeswoman said: A spokesman said: “The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service remains in attendance as crews tackle a large grass fire near Bonhill, West Dunbartonshire.                       

“Operations Control mobilised nine fire appliances to the scene after the alarm was raised at 5.28pm on Monday, April 22.

“The fire is largely extinguished with crews fighting some small pockets of fire.

“Firefighters will remain on scene until the area is made safe.”
