Firefighters tackle large grass fire close to M5 motorway

Firefighters are warning smokers to ensure any cigarettes or other smoking equipment is extinguished properly after a house fire in Hotwells last night.

Crews from Temple Back and Bedminster were called to a small fire in a property in Jacob’s Wells Road at around 7pm on Friday, July 26.

The fire was caused by “smoking materials”.

Avon Fire and Rescue Service said the fire was already out when they arrived at the scene, but have asked people to ensure all smoking materials are extinguished properly.

Then at 11pm three crews - from Avonmouth, Temple Back and Bedminster - were called to a large grass fire on land close to the M5 in Avonmouth.

A spokesperson from the fire service said the blaze was about 50 metres by 50 metres - which is roughly half the size of a football pitch.

Access to the area was difficult for the crews, but firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze which is believed to have been started accidentally.
