Firefighters tackle large blaze in Oldham after road sweeper catches fire

A road sweeper caught fire on a main road in Oldham in the early hours of this morning.

At around 7am on Sunday (October 10), fire crews were called to reports of an incident on Huddersfield Road.

Fire fighters from Chadderton and Mossley attended the scene where it was established that a road sweeper on a roadway had caught on fire.

Fire crews quickly extinguished the fire and were in attendance for around three hours.

A resident who lived nearby said the blaze was ‘pretty scary’.

Stephen Lovett said: “I just came across it at about 7am on the way to work.

“There was fuel and flames across both lanes and it was popping. It was pretty scary.”

Greater Manchester Fire Rescue Service (GMFRS) said there were no reports of any injuries.

A spokesperson for GMFRS added: “At approximately 6.55am on Sunday, 10th October, two fire engines from Chadderton and Mossley stations attended an incident on Huddersfield Road, Oldham.

“The fire involved a road sweeper on a roadway. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used three hose reels to extinguish the fire and were in attendance for around three hours.”
