Firefighters tackle huge car transporter blaze on M6

A section of the M6 was closed this morning after a car transporter burst into flames.

Emergency services were called to the scene on the northbound carriageway between junctions 25 and 26, near Wigan, shortly after 8.30am this morning (July 16).

They discovered a lorry was on fire, as well as five vehicles it was carrying at the time.

Two lanes were initially shut as fire crews dealt with the burning vehicle.

It led to delays back to junction 24 for Ashton-in-Makerfield.

The fire was brought under control after two hours, although one lane remained closed until shortly before midday in order for the vehicles to be recovered.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.

A spokesperson for Highways North West tweeted this morning: "The M6 northbound #J25 #Wigan #A49 to #J26 #OrrellInterchange #M58, Two lanes have been closed due to a fire. Manchester Fire are currently at scene, Traffic Officers are on their way to the area to assist."

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service added: “At just after 8:30am on Thursday 16 July, two GMFRS crews from Wigan and one from Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service were called to reports of a large vehicle fire on the M6 between Junctions 25 and 26 near Orrell, Wigan.

"Crews arrived quickly at the scene and discovered a car transporter and five vehicles on fire.

"Firefighters tackled the blaze using three hose reels, four breathing apparatus and cutting gear, and were in attendance for roughly two hours.”
