Firefighters tackle huge blaze at a Liverpool warehouse

Firefighters were this morning tackling a huge blaze at a warehouse in Liverpool.

Emergency services were called to the fire in Foster Street, Kirkdale , shortly before 4am.

The fire service arrived within minutes and found waste inside the warehouse alight.

There are currently 10 fire engines at the scene as well as two aerial appliances and a high-volume pump.

Local residents are being advised to keep their doors and windows closed while anyone with existing medical conditions are being told to "keep medicines nearby and call NHS 111 if ill effects occur".

One resident said the inside of her home smelled of smoke and complained of a sore throat.

Thick smoke could be seen above Kirkdale from the city centre.

Firefighters have met with Merseyside Police, United Utilities, Liverpool council, Network Rail and the owners of the warehouse.

The fire is thought to involve non-hazardous household waste.

Sandhills Lane, Juniper Street, Studholme Street and Bankhall Street are currently closed as a result of the blaze.
