Firefighters tackle flat fire after man falls asleep after starting cooking

Firefighters were called to a flat fire in Bury after someone started cooking and fell asleep.

The man who lives in the property in Wesley Street, Tottington, woke up at around 1.15am this morning (September 30) to find the flat full of smoke.

His smoke detector alerted crews from Bury, who attended. The man allegedly had to be removed from the flat by police after initially refusing to leave.

Watch manager Steve Wilcock said: "We were mobilised to reports of a domestic property fire.

"When we got there, the flat was heavily smoke logged and we used breathing apparatus to ventilate the property.

"It started because someone was cooking, they fell asleep and woke up in a highly smoke logged flat with the smoke detector beeping.

"Police were called as a man was obstructing us in our duty and he was removed from the property."

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police (GMP) confirmed that a man was removed from the flat 'for his own safety' and to allow firefighters to enter the property without obstruction. There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances.

Watch manager Wilcock warned against the dangers of cooking at night time or when people are tired.

He added: "It's something we've seen more in lockdown.

"About 60pc of accidental fires are caused by cooking and we always tell people to be safe."
