Firefighters tackle blaze in basement of building in Castlefield

Firefighters tackled a blaze in the basement of a building in Castlefield.

Five fire engines were called to Ellesmere Street, in Manchester city centre, just after 7.40am on Tuesday.

Crews used breathing apparatus, hose reels, cutting gear and other specialist equipment to bring the fire under control.

Firefighters managed to stop the fire spreading through the property.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service is investigating the cause of the fire. At this stage, it is believed to be accidental.

Firefighters remained at the scene on Tuesday morning.

A spokeswoman for GMFRS said: "At 7.42am, on June 11, GMFRS were called to a building fire on Ellesmere Street, Manchester.

"Five fire engines from Moss Side, Salford, Manchester Central, and Gorton stations responded to the call.

"Crews used eight breathing apparatus, 2 hose reels, cutting gear and other specialist equipment to tackle the fire.

"Thanks to the crews’ hard work, the fire was prevented from spreading from the basement to any other storeys. The fire is now out.

"Cause not yet known, but believed to be accidental. GMFRS will remain on the scene to make it safe. A small section of Ellesmere Street remains closed."
