The fire involved a chiller unit and a display cabinet, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used two hose reels, breaking-in gear and lighting equipment to tackle the flames and make the area safe.

A photograph taken today shows smoke and fire damage to the property.

One resident described what they saw of the late night incident.

“I saw smoke coming out of the cafe,” they told the Manchester Evening News.

“Then three fire engines were called.

“There were loads of fire officers - they were there for about two and a half hours. It was all quite dramatic but I’m glad no one was hurt.”

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “Last night (Tuesday 24 August) at around 10:30pm, three fire engines from Stretford, Moss Side and Salford fire stations were called to reports of a fire at a commercial premises on Oswald Road, Manchester.
