Firefighters tackle blaze at Edinburgh's Saughton Park as thick black smoke spotted for miles

Ten firefighters tackled a blaze at a park in Edinburgh this evening.

Images shared on social media showed thick, black smoke billowing over homes near Saughton Park in the west of the capital.

Cops confirmed they were treating the fire as deliberate and were hunting those responsible.

Two fire engines raced to the scene to combat flames after a pile of mats were torched next to an athletics track and changing rooms.

Neighbours took to social media to condemn whoever started the fire.

“Wee b******s!” Posted one. “Canny leave nowt alone things are bad enough.”

And another added: "Canny help but destroy things these kids.

"No good and broken glass everywhere - they can't even think about the animals.

"We all had wild times but never destroyed anything - sad times."

The historic park got a £6.7m refit two years ago - then the largest project of its kind in Scotland.

About ten firefighters have been scrambled to the scene to tackle the blaze with high pressure hoses.

An appliance from Sighthill and another from Tollcross were deployed to the park shortly before 7pm.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue spokeswoman told the Daily Record: “We’ve had several calls to the running track at Saughton Park where a quantity of rubber gym mats are on fire."

A Police Scotland spokeswoman confirmed officers are probing the blaze and treating is as suspicious.

"Police enquiries are continuing into a fire in Saughton Park, Edinburgh on the evening of Monday 1 June, where a shelter and sporting equipment were set alight," she added.

"The fire is being treated as wilful.  The fire has been extinguished and no one was injured.  Officers are currently following a number of lines of enquiry."
