Firefighters tackle blaze at block of city centre flats

Three fire crews from Avon Fire and Rescue Service tackled a blaze at a block of flats in the city centre after an 'arson' attack.

Firefighters from Temple, Bedminster and Hicks Gate were called to Waring House on Redcliff Hill at around 10.30pm after a fire had started in one of the high-rise's bin rooms.

A relative of someone who lives in the block of flats, who did not want to be named, said the fire was an 'act of arson' and it is a recurring problem, but a spokesperson for Avon Fire and Rescue Service said it was caused accidentally.

The spokesperson said: "At 10.25pm crews from Temple Back, Bedminster and Hicks Gate fire stations were called to reports of smoke inhalation at flats in Waring House in the Redcliffe area of Bristol.

"When crews arrived they found a fire in a bin room and used one high pressure hose reel to extinguish the fire.

"Crews checked landing areas to check for any smoke logging.

"The sprinklers had activated and a caretaker was in attendance.

"This was accidental ignition."

It was the second time this month the fire service has been called to the tower blocks after six fire engines attended a blaze there on October 18.
