Firefighters tackle blaze at Bedlington industrial estate for six hours as smoke filled sky

A blaze at a waste management firm in Bedlington has been extinguished after firefighters tackled the flames for six hours.

Plumes of smoke could be seen for miles after a fire broke out at Remondis just before 11am on Wednesday.

Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service sent three crews to the scene who have spent a total of six hours fighting the blaze.

It is understood the fire started in a rubbish shed on the Barrington industrial estate.

Members of the public were urged to keep their doors and windows closed due to the large plumes of smoke coming from the building.

By 3pm crews had got the fire under control and were in the process of damping down the area and clearing waste and debris.

Crews then left the site by 5pm, after the blaze was fully extinguished.

A Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: "We received a call at 10.58am to a fire at Barrington Industrial Estate in Bedlington.

"We have sent three pumps - two from Pegswood and one from West Hartford - to the scene."
