Firefighters tackle blaze after 'car driven into café and set alight' in Durham

This shocking footage shows firefighters tackle a blaze at a café in County Durham after a car was "driven into the entrance and set alight".

The incident happened at Sizzlers on Blackhills Road, Horden, shortly after 9.30pm on Wednesday and sparked a huge emergency service response.

Durham Constabulary believe a black Mitsubishi shogun was driven into the entrance of Sizzlers and that the occupants set the vehicle alight before making off on foot.

In a video captured at the scene, the car was ravaged by flames and a small explosion can be heard before fire engines arrive at the scene and firefighters extinguish the blaze.

Police arrived soon afterwards and close off the road to secure the scene and keep residents away.

Witnesses from the scene believe one police van, one police car and two fire engines all attended the scene.

A joint investigation is now under way with the force and County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service to establish the circumstances around the incident.

This morning, the road remains closed off with the aftermath of the fire clearly visible from the charred building.

Durham Constabulary is now appealing for anyone with information into the incident to come forward.

A spokesperson for Durham Constabulary said: "Police were called to a premises in Horden last night (January 13) following reports of a vehicle colliding with a building.
