Police at the scene in bushland near Taree

Rural firefighters working to put out a small fire have discovered human remains in bushland on the New South Wales mid-north coast.

The Rural Fire Service crew made the discovery just after 6:00am near Yarratt Road in northern Taree while battling a fire in Yarratt State Forest.

Police officers from Manning-Great Lakes police district are on the scene and have initiated an investigation.

The remains were confirmed to be human and were believed to be those of an adult.

A post-mortem examination will be conducted to confirm identity and cause of death.
