Firefighters still working at Linwood depot blaze 24 hours after it started

By Marc McLean

Firefighters were still working hard to ensure safety at Linwood Industrial Estate this afternoon – more than 24 hours after a huge blaze broke out.

Fire crews and an emergency response vehicle remained on site at the headquarters of waste management and recycling firm Enva following the fire.

No one was hurt in the incident, however it took many hours to bring the flames under control and Enva’s operations continue to be disrupted.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said yesterday: “We were alerted at 11.19am on Thursday, June 16 to reports that a fire had taken hold within the grounds of a recycling centre in Burnbrae Road, Linwood.

“Operations control mobilised a total of six appliances as well as a high reach appliance.

“Crews are still at the scene and there are no reported casualties.”

No one was available for comment from Enva.

Plumes of black smoke could be seen in the sky across Paisley on Thursday as the flames raged below inside the yard. The depot was closed mid-morning, with lorries from various haulage firms at the estate being turned back.

Enva, which also has a depot in Paisley’s Murray Street, is a leading waste management firm servicing many businesses across the country.

The company notified customers within hours of the blaze that a “major incident” had occurred at its headquarters.

Enva issued the following statement: “Due to a major fire at our Linwood depot, you will see a disruption in your service.

“Please do not attend the site to tip in if you normally would. Please note any collections due in the coming days will also be impacted, however we are working to minimise the disruption to service.”

Enva operates across 30 facilities in the United Kingdom and Ireland, employing more than 1500 people.

The cause of the fire is yet to be confirmed.
