Firefighters battle east coast fires overnight

FIREFIGHTERS remain at a blaze on the outskirts of Tranent after emergency services were called out yesterday evening.

Crews from throughout Edinburgh, Midlothian and East Lothian were called out to fires in Musselburgh and Tranent shortly after 8pm.

Six teams of firefighters, including from Dalkeith, Newcraighall and Musselburgh, as well as Edinburgh’s McDonald Road and Marionville, were called to “a large grass area” near Clark Avenue in Musselburgh at about 8.10pm.

Firefighters remained on the scene for more than 90 minutes tackling the blaze.

Meanwhile, more firefighters were called out to hay bales alight near Smith Wynd, on the southern edge of Tranent.

Joining firefighters from the town were colleagues from Musselburgh and Penicuik after a call came in at about 8.20pm.

Firefighters used beaters and other tools to tackle the blaze and a crew remains on the scene.

It is unclear if the fires were started deliberately and Police Scotland have been approached for comment.
