Firefighters still battling huge blaze 'caused by barbecue' on moorland north of Bolton

A huge fire believed to have been caused by a barbecue is still raging on a moorland near Bolton.

Crews are still tackling the blaze on Darwen Moor this morning.

They were first called to the scene just off Bolton Road at around 6pm on Saturday, May 30.

The fire is believed to have been started by a barbecue and the person responsible has now been spoken to by police.

Ten fire engines remain on the moor this morning and will be battling the fire all day, a spokesman for Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said.

Ben Norman, assistant chief fire officer, said yesterday: “It’s been a busy few days for Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service. We had a significant incident on Winter Hill, thankfully we have managed to contain that to a relatively small area compared to the vast fire we saw two years ago.

“Sadly, that wasn’t the only incident we have seen this week, we've had two very large incidents. One started yesterday in Darwen and we’ve been there today with eight fire engines, a huge number of specialist assets working closely with land owners and United Utilities.

“That means we’re going to have in the region of 50 to 60 of our firefighters through this Covid emergency, focused on an incident which was totally avoidable.

“That was someone by their own admission, they called the incident in, and have since spoken to the police and given a full account of that fire,

“Whilst it wasn’t deliberate, it was wholly avoidable. You don’t need to take a BBQ to enjoy the fabulous countryside that we’ve got.”
