Firefighters still at scene of huge Miles Platting blaze 18 hours later

Firefighters are continuing to work at the scene of a huge blaze which ripped through a building in Miles Platting.

Oldham Road is still shut in both directions, about 18 hours after the fire service were first called to the blaze at a commercial building.

They are now scaling back and 'damping down' to ensure it is fully extinguished.

At the height of the blaze, which was first reported at 10.40pm, eight fire engines and specialist equipment were used to tackle it.

Smoke plumes could be seen for miles around.

Now only one fire engine is at the scene as the significant operation comes to a close.

A fire service spokesman said: "Firefighters have scaled back their operations and one fire engine from Phillips Park remains at the scene, following a night that saw up to eight pumps and other specialist appliances tackling the blaze.

"The crew is currently damping down the last remaining hotspots and will carry out checks to ensure that the area is safe before bringing the incident to a close."

Earlier, station manager in charge of the incident, Steven Forster, told of the difficult conditions firefighters worked through, which were exacerbated by the recent heatwave.

He said: "Our firefighters have worked exceptionally hard throughout the night to contain this fire and bring it under control.

"This has been a challenging incident, with crews needing to gain access to different areas on the site and working under the very warm conditions we’ve experienced lately, and I want to praise the determination and professionalism they’ve shown."
