Firefighters stage dramatic rescue of horse stuck in Paisley river

Firefighters staged a dramatic rescue yesterday after a horse got stuck in the White Cart River.

Passers-by spotted the helpless animal stranded up to its shoulders in the freezing water at Ben More, Paisley, yesterday morning.

After failing to coax it out the water, the walkers were forced to call the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service for help.

It’s understood the horse was stabled at a yard in Hawkhead and had been grazing in a nearby field when it wandered and got into difficulty.

Firefighters sent out two water rescue teams, who quickly rescued the stricken horse, called Ryan.

He was reunited with his owner after being removed from the water uninjured.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: “We were alerted at 10.47am on Friday to reports of a horse stuck within the White Cart River, Ben More, Paisley, Renfrewshire.

“Operations control mobilised two water rescue teams and two appliances to the scene.

“Firefighters removed the horse from the water and the animal was fit and well.

“Crews left the scene and there were no reported casualties.”
