Firefighters spent the night tackling yet another moorland wildfire

Firefighters have spent the night tackling another wildfire on Greater Manchester's moorland.

A blaze broke out at Deeply Vale, between Bury and Rochdale, at about 4.30pm on Tuesday.

Plumes of smoke from the fire, which involved a large patch of moorland, could be seen for miles around.

Crews used beaters and hose reels to douse the flames, and remained at the scene until 8am today.

The cause of the fire has not yet been revealed.

Pictures shared on social media show the impact of the fire on the land, with grass having turned to scorched earth.

The area, close to Ashworth Moor Reservoir and Owd Betts pub, is popular with walkers and was once home to the legendary Deeply Vale music festival.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: “Firefighters were called at around 4.30pm yesterday to reports of a fire in the open in Deeply Vale, Bury.

“Three fire engines and a wildfire unit attended and found a fire involving around 400m by 200m of moorland. Crews used beaters and hose reels to extinguish the fire.

“One fire engine remained on the scene overnight and this morning crews inspected the scene and extinguished any final hot spots. All firefighters had left the scene shortly after 8am.”

It is one of several fires to have broken out on the region's moors in recent days.

Crews also spent last night fighting a moor fire near Dovestone Reservoir in Oldham.

At its height the fire, which broke out on Tuesday afternoon, covered an area of around 600 square metres of Saddleworth Moor near the reservoir.

In an update this morning, GMFRS said the efforts of crews along with the damp conditions overnight had seen the fire largely extinguished with only a few hot spots remaining.

Over the weekend, dozens of firefighters spent in total around sixty hours bringing a fire on moorland north of Bolton under control.

The blaze, on Darwen Moor, is believed to have been started by a barbecue. The person responsible has been spoken to by police.
