Firefighters scrambled to another blaze in Elephant and Castle

Workers fled as a fire broke out at a building site in Elephant and Castle

Firefighters were scrambled to a blaze in Elephant and Castle just weeks after a fire and explosion caused mayhem in the area.

The fire started on a building site and one man was treated at the scene following the incident at just before midday on Friday.

Workers ran from the scene as fire spread at a building under construction on Deacon Street.

Footage on Twitter showed smoke pluming into the air and flames shooting upwards.

Accountant Dan Cox, 28, who is a local resident said: “I got there before the fire engines. All the staff were running away from the site. Part of a new pavilion they were building was on fire. It was a big fire, the flames were about the size of a house and there was lots of black smoke.

A London Fire Brigade statement said: “Part of a first-floor roof terrace was damaged by fire. One man was treated on scene.

“The Brigade was called at 11.44 and the fire was under control by 12.14.

“Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters from Lambeth, Peckham, Shadwell and Brixton fire stations attended the scene. The cause of the fire is under investigation.”

On June 28, a blaze in the arches close to Elephant and Castle Tube station cause an explosion which ripped through a garage. Elephant and Castle station was closed and roads around the area were blocked off as firefighters fought the inferno.

Smoke could be seen from all over London and hundreds of residents were evacuated while buildings in the area where made safe. An investigation into the cause of the first fire has been launched.
