Firefighters rush to scene of fire in Co Kildare as black smoke seen billowing into sky

Firefighters rushed to the scene of a fire in Kildare on Sunday evening.

Several units of the fire brigade raced to the blaze near the Bord Na Mona Drehid waste management disposal plant.

Two units entered the Drehid Landfill and at least two more units are stationed elsewhere on the perimeter of the complex in case the fire spreads throughout the thousands of acres of bogland.

What to do in an emergency situation

The landfill facility itself is not on fire.

Drehid Waste Management Facility is one of the largest landfill sites in the country with a 120,000 tonnes a year of engineered landfill and a 25,000 tonnes per year composting facility.

It is the second time in recent days that fire crews had to battle flames at the site as Air Corp helicopters were called to deal with a fire at the site on Friday.
