Firefighters rush to Leeds city centre to rescue two men from river ledge

Firefighters were called to rescue two men from a ledge by the River Aire in Leeds city centre on Thursday night.

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service crews from Leeds and Hunslet fire stations were called to The Calls at 11.06pm on February 13 after one of the men fell ill.

A spokeswoman for the fire service said: "We got them off the ledge and left them in the hands of Yorkshire Ambulance Service."

The firefighters left the scene shortly after midnight, while the paramedics were assessing the two men.

One man was then taken to St James's University Hospital by ambulance for treatment.

A Yorkshire Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: "We received a call at 11.06pm on Thursday, February 13 to reports of a medical incident at The Calls in Leeds.

"We dispatched our Hazardous Area Response Team, an ambulance and a rapid response vehicle to the scene.

"One patient was taken by road ambulance to St James's University Hospital."

Crews have rescued over 115 people from the River Aire in Leeds since 2014 and carried out more than 280 people across West Yorkshire.

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service has installed 11 throw lines along the river in Leeds, between Neville Street and Asda House, and they have been used to save lives.

In March 2018, an eagle-eyed security guard saw 20-year-old Lou Evans fall into the river near Riverside Court and he used the throw line.

She managed to cling on until firefighters arrived on the scene and rescued her.
