Firefighters resume battling five-hectare blaze in Meremere

Seven crews and one helicopter continue to battle a five-hectare vegetation fire near Meremere, north of Waikato today.

Fire and Emergency incident controller Thomas Harre says crews currently have the fire controlled within the fire's perimeter.

The fire was first notified shortly before 7pm yesterday and last night covered about five hectares of native bush, including peat alongside the main trunk railway line.

Crews involving around 70 firefighters were stood down about midnight, with five crews returning to the scene at 7am this morning. Brigades from both the Counties Manakau and Waikato Districts have responded.

The main trunk railway remains closed but while the fire is visible from State Highway 1 the road is not affected.

Harre said last night no structures were at risk and conditions were calm, helping the firefighting efforts.
