Firefighters rescue two dogs and a turtle after blaze breaks out at pub

Firefighters rescued two dogs and a turtle after a blaze broke out at a pub in Wigan.

Crews were called to the Earl of Balcarres, in Scholes, shortly after 11.10pm on Tuesday.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire Rescue Service said they believed the fire started on the first floor of the building.

Firefighters wearing specialist breathing gear rescued two dogs and a turtle from the pub before bringing the flames under control.

It is not believed that any people were inside the building at the time.

No one is thought to have been injured.

The cause of the fire is now under investigation.

A police car and a fire engine remained parked outside the pub, which is currently closed under lockdown restrictions, on Wednesday morning.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: "At 11.12pm on Tuesday, February 2, GMFRS were called to a fire involving a derelict pub in Scholes, Wigan.

"Fire engines from Wigan, Atherton and Leigh attended.

"The fire involved the first floor of the building and firefighters wearing breathing apparatus tackled the fire and ventilated the building.

"The cause of the fire is under investigation."
