Police, firefighters and a veterinary clinic had to join forces this week to rescue a red squirrel that got its head stuck in a manhole cover in western Germany.

The furry rodent got stuck in one of the cover’s holes in Dortmund.

Dortmund's fire department said it responded to a call about a squirrel in difficulty on a street next to a park in the city centre.

When rescuers arrived, they spotted the squirrel's head poking out of a hole in the cover.

Initial attempts to free the animal were unsuccessful, so the manhole cover was removed. It was then taken to a nearby veterinary clinic, while police were called in to guard the open sewer.

Vets used anaesthetic to calm the squirrel and then freed the animal. It was treated for superficial neck wounds and is expected to soon be released back into the wild.

It comes after a fat rat stuck in a manhole cover prompted a major rescue operation in Bensheim, Germany.

A team of at least nine people attended to unleash the rotund rodent from its precarious situation after it was spotted by a young girl.
