Firefighters rescue Pippin the cat stuck up a cafe chimney

A cat being taken on holiday to Devon decided it much preferred Bristol, and shot up a chimney when its owner stopped for a coffee.

Pippin and her owner popped into the Coffee #1 cafe in North Street, Ashton Gate, on Friday lunchtime, while on their way to Devon.

But inside the cafe the fractious feline managed to get away from the care of its owner and shot straight up the chimney and stayed there, behind a partition wall.

She wouldn’t come down, was out of reach and no manner of cat treats and coaxing would retrieve her.

So the Green Watch at Bedminster Fire Station were summoned. The firefighters based on Hartcliffe Way are Avon’s designated animal rescue team - and that could mean anything from a cow stuck in a rhyne to a seagull stuck in a net on a roof.

But this time, Pippin presented a unique challenge.

The Green Watch team improvised, and selected the slimmest firefighter for the job, using a table for added height.

“After escaping from her owner, Pippin climbed behind a partition wall at Coffee #1,” explained a spokesperson for Bedminster Fire Station.

“The slimmest member of the crew used a catch net to safely capture the feline. Pippin was reunited with her owner after her ordeal and appears just fine,” he added.
