Firefighters rescue over 50 trapped sheep from flood water

Firefighters worked for hours in order to rescue over 50 sheep who were stranded in rising flood water in Co Armagh.

The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service were called to Tynan Abbey, Tynan, at around 3pm on Thursday, December 9, following reports that 52 sheep were trapped in flood water.

One appliance from Armagh, the Large Animal Rescue Team from Newcastle and the Specialist Rescue Team were sent to help the sheep.

Crews worked with the farmer using a boat to rescue the stuck sheep, including in dark and challenging conditions.

After four hours all of the sheep were successfully rescued and it was dealt with by 7pm.

A NIFRS spokesperson said: "Yesterday at 3pm, 1 Fire Appliance from Armagh, the Large Animal Rescue team from Newcastle, and the Specialist Rescue Team were called to rescue sheep who were trapped by rising flood water in Tynan Abbey, Tynan, Armagh.

"The crews worked with the farmer to rescue the sheep using a Specialist Rescue Team boat. They worked into darkness in challenging conditions to ensure 52 sheep were successfully rescued. The incident was dealt with by 7pm."
