Firefighters rescue cat and her kittens from shed fire in West Denton on International Cat Day

A cat and her nine kittens were all rescued from a home in Newcastle after a fire broke out in a nearby shed.

Three fire engines were called to the blaze on Earsdon Close in West Denton in the west end of the city just after 2.30pm on Thursday.

The fire was believed to have started in a shed and was in danger of spreading to a house on the street.

Firefighters from Gosforth, Byker and Swalwell stations arrived on the scene and were able to rescue a cat and nine kittens as well as two dogs from the home.

The rescue happened to take place on International Cat Day, which is on August 8 each year.

A spokesperson for the Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said nobody was hurt and firefighters left the scene just before 3.30pm.
