Firefighters rescue 8 people after road left looking like a river during floods

This picture shows Wollaton Road in Beeston after flash flooding hit the county on Wednesday (June 17).

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service dispatched firefighters from Stapleford to help lead eight people to safety as the road was left resembling a river.

Businesses, homes and vehicles were submerged in the space of a few hours during an evening of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.

Webs Furniture Training, which trains apprentices at its facility just off Wollaton Road, was submerged in around 2ft of water, leaving employees "in disbelief".

Floodwater also raged into the Tesco Extra store in the town, with shoppers capturing the shocking scene on camera.

It was subsequently forced to close.

A couple in Sandiacre also lost everything when a lightning bolt struck their home, starting a large blaze which ripped through the building.

Speaking of the incident in Wollaton Road, Stapleford Fire Station said: "We deployed two firefighters using water rescue equipment to check on the occupants of a number of vehicles.

"There were no reports of any injuries, eight people were led to safety by firefighters."

Other areas of the county were also badly affected, including Beatty Walk in Ilkeston, when drains were overwhelmed and homes were engulfed in sewage water.
