Firefighters remain on the scene at large-scale blaze in Lanarkshire

Lanarkshire fire fighters are still on the scene of a large-scale fire that took hold yesterday afternoon.

The blaze began on Monday, May 11, in Coalburn.

Residents reported sightings of it from their homes as fire fighters rushed to the area.

The fire took hours to bring under control.

One resident on social media said: “Just looked like every time they were getting better of it, wind would change and up it went again when I was watching earlier.”

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 3.21pm on Monday, May 11, to reports of a fire that had taken hold of a wide area of grass and trees near Middlemuir Road, Coalburn, South Lanarkshire.

“Operations Control mobilised a number of appliances to the scene to extinguish the flames.

“Two appliances currently remain in attendance.”
