Firefighters remain at the scene of a huge scrapyard blaze in Bury 48 hours after it broke out

Firefighters remain at the scene of a huge scrapyard blaze in Bury 48 hours after it first broke out.

Tonight two crews continue to damp down 'hotspots' and steam is said to be still rising from some parts of the site off Pimhole Road.

Rochdale Road has also reopened for the first time since the fire began.

The fire broke out at 6pm on Thursday.

At its height around 100 firefighters tackled the fire, which measured 30 metres wide by 15 metres high.

Huge plumes of smoke could be seen rising over the town.

Nearby residents reported hearing explosions coming from the site.

Both the Environment Agency and Public Health England were contacted due to concerns about the pollution generated by the blaze.

In a statement on Saturday evening incident commander Craig Pinder said he expects crews to still be there on Monday.

He added: "GMFRS will have two fire engines on the scene overnight dealing hotspots and damping down and we will take a view in the morning as to what resources are still required.

"Steam is still rising from parts of the incident and I expect GMFRS to still be on site come Monday.

"I want to praise the dedication of firefighters who have worked hard for nearly two days at this scrapyard.

"As a fire and rescue service we are also grateful to partner agencies for their support and in particular I want to thank the local community and residents living nearby for their co-operation and patience as we have worked to extinguish this fire and keep the area safe."

An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
