Firefighters remain at scene of major industrial blaze as public urged to avoid site

Firefighters are still at the scene of an industrial fire this morning which sent plumes of smoke across the North West.

There were 20 engines and two platform ladders at the scene on Sankey Valley Industrial Estate in Newton-le-Willow s yesterday afternoon as crews fought to contain the blaze.

Locals were warned to keep their windows closed due to the smoke dispersed into the area, and fire bosses described the blaze as a 'major incident.'

Yesterday road closures were put in place and a multi-agency meeting took place between Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service, Merseyside Police, Network Rail, United Utilities, St Helens Council, the Environment Agency, British Transport Police, the British Red Cross and NHS England.

The ECHO has been told that three appliances and two specialist appliances are still at the scene this morning, although the main fire was extinguished at around 10.35pm last night

A spokesman for the service said: "Firefighters have remained on scene overnight carrying out hot spotting and damping down operations.

"Five fire engines remain at the scene.

"The majority of the roads around the area have been reopened and businesses have been allowed access to their premises.

"However, the nearby Newton-le-Willows Recycling Centre remains closed.

"Members of the public should not attempt to travel to the site as they will not be able to gain access.

"There are also disruption and changes to rail travel as a result of the incident.

"Please check before you travel and only travel if your journey is essential."

A further multi agency meeting is to take place on Thursday morning.
