Firefighters reinforce safety message after rubbish deliberately set alight

Firefighters dealt with several fires thought to have been started deliberately yesterday evening.

At 6.30pm a crew from Kingswood attended Merritt Way in Siston, where a tree and shrubland was alight.

The fire was attributed to youths.

At 8.37pm crews from Bedminster tackled a fire in woodland off Hartcliffe Way in Bedminster, also thought to have been started deliberately.

Rubbish was deliberately set alight at Bransby Way, Weston-super-Mare and Newbridge Road, St Anne's.

But rubbish fires in Frogmorton Road, Knowle, and Sion Hill, Clifton, were thought to have been started accidentally.

A spokesman for Avon Fire and Rescue Service urged people to take care when having bonfires or barbecues.

The message is to keep fires away from sheds, fences and trees and do not use accelerants such as petrol or paraffin.

The fire service also advises to keep a bucket of water or a hose nearby, do not leave fires unattended, keep children and pets away from fire and do not burn substances which could produce toxic fumes or explode.
