Firefighters race to attend late night blaze at Hairmyres Hospital COVID ward

Investigations into a late night blaze on a COVID ward at Hairmyres Hospital are ongoing.

Fire engines rushed to the hospital on Thursday night after reports of a fire on site.

Emergency services were alerted at around 10pm. Three fire engines responded to the incident, with Police Scotland also in attendance.

A spokeswoman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said firefighters remain on the scene to carry out investigations.

It is understood the fire began on the COVID ICU ward and police have cordoned off parts of the site.

Site director at the hospital, Russell Coulthard, told the News the fire broke out on ward one.

He added: “Site staff immediately raised the alarm and all patients were safely removed from the area.

“All patients have been managed safely, with patients within the ward and the adjacent wards moved to other parts of the hospital. No patients have been transferred off site.

“Emergency services fully extinguished the fire and the fire service has declared the site safe. Due to the damage and disruption of the fire, emergency patients are currently being diverted to the most appropriate hospitals.

“Investigations are ongoing.”

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 9.45pm on Thursday, October 29 to reports of a building fire at University Hospital Hairmyres, Eaglesham Road, East Kilbride, South Lanarkshire.

“Operations Control mobilised three appliances to the scene, where crews assisted NHS partners with an evacuation of three wards as they worked to extinguish the fire on the first floor.

“Three casualties were assessed by hospital staff.

“Firefighters left after making the area safe.”
