Firefighters pay tribute to 'much-loved' Stephen Hunt who died in city centre blaze

Firefighters have paid tribute to one of their former colleagues - seven years after he died in tragic circumstances.

Father-of-two Stephen Hunt was found collapsed inside a shop in Manchester's Northern Quarter whilst attempting to put out the fire in July, 2013.

The 38-year-old, from Radcliffe, was pronounced dead later that evening.

Seven years later his colleagues are still laying flowers at his memorial in Philips Park and have paid tribute to their lost friend.

In a post on Twitter, a spokesman for the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: "Seven years on since FF Stephen Hunt lost his life doing the job he loved, our thoughts remain with his loved ones.

"Today, firefighters at Philips Park have paid their respects as they remember a much-loved colleague and friend."

A later inquest into Mr Hunt's death found that the fire had been started by two 15-year-old girls.

One witness claimed that one of the girls had admitted that she had pushed a lit piece of paper through the doorway.

Mr Hunt was among 60 firefighters who were called in to tackle the blaze which caused major damage to the interior of the building.
