Firefighters have to free boy who climbed into a Morrisons locker

A teenage schoolboy was rescued by firefighters after getting trapped inside a Morrisons locker he climbed into "for a joke".

The youngster decided to clamber inside the locker as a prank to impress his pals - but then discovered he couldn't get out.

His friends raised the alarm and fire crews attended the scene at Morrisons, in the St Andrew's Retail Park in Small Heath, Birmingham on Monday afternoon.

They found the boy stuck inside the confined space and used cutting tools to free him after around ten minutes "uninjured but shaken."

A spokesperson for West Midlands Fire Service said: “We had the call at 3.54pm on January 13 to Morrisons at the St Andrew's Retail Park on Coventry Road.

“The call said a schoolchild was locked inside a locker.

“We sent one fire engine from Highgate fire station in the city with five fire fighters. They were there in less than five minutes.

“I believe the initial information came from on-site security.

“The child was released using tools carried in the fire engine. Fortunately the child wasn’t injured.”

Watch commander Christ Gauntlett, from Highgate fire station, said the lad was in his young teens and had decided to climb inside one of them for a joke.

He said the boy closed the door and at this point the magnetic lock sealed him in the box, leaving him unable to open it from the inside.

Staff at Morrisons told fire crews the lockers didn't belong to the store and they had no idea who had put them there.

Mr Gauntlett added: "He was very very lucky that his mates were there.

"I dread to think what would have happened if he was on his own because no-one would have heard him calling for help."
