Firefighters had to rescue a distressed man from the River Irwell

A man had to be rescued from the River Irwell last night.

Firefighters went into the water to save the man during an incident in Spinningfields, near the former Mark Addy Pub.

They were called at 7.52pm to Bridge Street in the city centre to reports of a distressed male in the water.

He was treated by paramedics, and is not thought to have been seriously hurt.

It's not clear how the man came to be in the river.

Fire engines from Salford and Manchester Central stations as well as technical appliances from other areas responded to the incident, and spent about 45 minutes at the scene.
