Firefighters dig through five tons of dirt to rescue dog stuck down rabbit hole

A dog trapped for hours down a rabbit hole emerged unscathed – after firefighters dug through five tons of soil and stones to reach him.

Hook, a four-year-old Jack Russell, was walking with his owner Kevin McKenna when he bolted down the hole.

But the underground network of tunnels near Lennoxtown, Dunbartonshire, proved too much for his navigation skills.

After all efforts by Kevin and his family to locate their beloved pet failed, they called in the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.

Firefighters used a specialist telescopic camera to locate the terrified terrier and then spent hours digging their way through a mountain of dirt.

Lennoxtown station manager Brian Byrne said: “It was a great feeling to be able to reunite Hook with his owner.

“Our firefighters worked tirelessly as a team, using specialist equipment as well as manually digging what probably amounted to as much as five tons of soil and stones.”

Hook has been checked over by a vet and was found to be none the worse for last weekend’s underground scrape.

Kevin’s brother-in-law Stephen Cobain said: “The firefighters did a fantastic job. A huge thank you to them from all of our family.”
