Firefighters confronted by gang of 30 'aggressive' youths while attending blaze in Lemington

A crew of firefighters were confronted by a gang of "aggressive" youths while attending an emergency in Newcastle.

The group of approximately 30 youths threatened and verbally abused firefighters who were trying to extinguish a rubbish fire at Tyne View in Lemington on Monday night.

One even tried to take a hose reel from the crew, the fire service said.

CCTV captured from the fire engines has been handed over to Northumbria Police who have launched an investigation.

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service station manager Geoff Hagon said: "It’s very disappointing that our firefighters came under attack from young people again last night.

"Fortunately no one was hurt, but it is totally unacceptable that our crews should face this type of threatening behaviour and verbal abuse.

"Some of these young people only looked as if they were in their early teens, so we’d like to remind parents to talk to your children about respecting firefighters and the work we do.

"Ask them where they are going, and who they are with. Being with your mates shouldn't land you with a criminal record, but anyone who abuses firefighters faces this risk.”

A firefighter posted a video on their Facebook page pleading for the anti-social behaviour to stop.

She said: "Firefighters were attacked again last night whilst carrying out their duties, this is not acceptable.

"To all of the parents out there, do you know where and what your children are up to when they're not under your supervision?

"To the people responsible for the attacks, we are here to protect you. Stop attacking us."

Northumbria Police Neighbourhood Insp Lesley Wheatley said: "It is extremely disappointing to see emergency service personnel being abused while trying to do their job.

“This deplorable behaviour is completely unacceptable and is something we take incredibly seriously.

"We are following a number of lines of inquiry into this incident including reviewing CCTV footage and would urge anyone who knows the identity of those who were responsible to come forward.

“We would also ask parents to work with us and make sure they know where their child is going at night.

"If you have any information about this incident, please contact us by calling 101 quoting log 1038 080419.
