Firefighters called to Sunderland allotment as pigeon crees destroyed by fire

Three pigeon crees have been destroyed after a fire broke out at a Sunderland allotment.

Three fire crews, one from Farringdon station and two from Sunderland Central, were called to the Corporation Road allotments in Hendon on Sunday afternoon.

Despite their efforts, three coops housing pigeons were ravaged by the fire.

A spokesperson for the Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said the three crees had been "100 per cent damaged by fire".

It is not currently known if the birds were killed or if any were saved from the flames.

While firefighters were at the allotments, they asked the public to avoid the area as they brought the fire under control.

They then left the scene at around 3.30pm, around two hours after they were first called.
