Firefighters called to blaze at flat next to St Nick's Market in the city centre

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus rushed to extinguish a fire in a flat at St Nicholas' Market in the city centre on bank holiday Sunday (Aug 25).

Crews were called at just after 6.30pm to reports of smoke and flames from the flat in Corn Street, which at the time was busy with bank holiday visitors.

Three fire engines rushed to the scene and found a fire in the kitchen of an upstairs flat.

Two firefighters donned breathing apparatus and used hose reels to put out the blaze, while other deployed positive pressure ventilation systems to clear the smoke from the building.

A spokesperson for Avon Fire and Rescue Service said no one was in the flat at the time of the fire, and they believed the cause to be accidental.
