Firefighters call in reinforcements to rescue cat from roof of a house in Southmead

This was the moment firefighters in Bristol put their turntable ladder training into practice - and rescued a cat that had somehow got stuck on the roof of a house.

Crews from Southmead were called to the home in Seagry Close to reports from worried passers-by that the cat was up on the roof of the two-storey home and had no way of getting down.

Southmead crews summoned their colleagues from Temple Fire Station in the city centre, where the city's turntable ladder is based, and were able to safely reach the stricken moggie, who gratefully accepted the offer of a lift down to the ground.

The call came in at around 10.15am today, Monday, to the residential area near Southmead Hospital. No one was quite sure how the cat got up there - although the property does have a lower roof and the lure of birds up on the higher roof may have proved too strong for the curious cat.

A spokesperson for Avon Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were called at 10.16am to reports of an animal stuck on the roof of a property in Seagry Close in Southmead.

"Crews from Southmead and Temple attended the incident and found a cat stuck on the roof of the building.

"Firefighters used the turntable ladder, one 135 ladder and a roof ladder to help the cat self-rescue from the top of the building," she added.
