Andrew Symons, 46, of Pontllanfraith, witnessed the fire.

He said: "There used to be an old boxing gym years ago and was recently sold but it has been empty for a while.

"For people who live nearby, it's a bit of a landmark. I'm in my 40s now and used to go boxing there when I was 10. It's a shame because it has been closed for so long. It's pretty bad.

"There are houses close by and a car sales place but there's no major danger for them.

"When the police arrived they were knocking on they were knocking everyone's door to tell them to close their windows and it smelled as well, like plastic, and there's smoke everywhere.

"They're still putting it out but it keeps bursting back out into flames."
